Kids’ Orchestra

Make Music. Make a Difference.

In 2010, The Powell Group founded Kids’ Orchestra, a nonprofit organization that offers instruments, musical instruction, and performance opportunities to students in kindergarten through fifth grade for students throughout East Baton Rouge Parish. Its mission is both simple and beautiful: to bring children of all cultures and backgrounds together using music education as a vehicle to foster teamwork, develop understanding, and emphasize excellence.

Based on El Sistema, Kids’ Orchestra gives public, private and charter elementary school students the chance to play an instrument as part of an orchestra. It also provides tutoring, homework help, transportation and a healthy snack. Students meet twice a week after school for 90 minutes for instruction and on one weekend a month for full orchestra rehearsal to prepare for their end-of-semester concerts.

The demand for this program in the community has fostered Kids’ Orchestra’s tremendous growth. What began as an after-school program with less than 50 students in two schools, has grown and now serves more than 800 students at 24 schools while employing 70 teachers. It also has expanded its services with the Kids’ Orchestra Kids’ Choir, which helps young musicians find a harmony in their powerful voices. As the only music-based program of its kind for kindergarten through fifth grade education in the Baton Rouge area, there continues to be room to serve; in fact, there are currently more than 100 children on the waiting list.

Kids’ Orchestra is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization.
